This premium Old Vine GSM typically sells for $75 AUD in Australia - which equates to approximately $80 NZD per bottle. With the effects of the trade spat between Australia and China still hurting Australia's premium red wine industry, we were approached to sell a parcel of this wine under the radar in New Zealand as a mystery deal* to move some of the capacity that the Asian markets would normally account for.
This plush, generously framed GSM is produced from 75-year-old vines and it will take your palate through a complete sensory journey, with the fruit-forward shiraz component harmonising beautifully with the juicy and glossy character of the grenache. The mourvedre component sustains the long, savoury finish and brings everything together. The use of new oak is evident, and the tannin structure is wonderfully composed. Read the reviews below to reassure yourself what's on the table here.
Aussie GSM fans will instantly fall for this captivating wine - and newcomers to the luxe world of the Holy Trinity of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre will wonder how they have missed out on this blend all their lives.
Tasting notes
Lisa Cardelli, WinePilot: Aromatic whiffs of red roses, lavender, and sage follow, followed by iron and graphite, blue fruits, new leather, and bitter cocoa nib. Dusty tannins, uber-juicy drops of red and blue fruits, and some gentle spice caressing follow. Well-balanced alcohol, the lovely concentration of flavours at the back of the palate, and the finesse of acidity accompany the fruit profile through a complete sensory trip. 96pts.
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit: Sweetly rich and inviting, the wine shows dark berry, vanillin oak, warm spice and dried flower aromas on the nose. The succulent palate displays a silky-smooth mouthfeel and layers of fine-grained tannins, making it supple and flavoursome. Beautifully harmonious and highly enjoyable. 94pts.
Ray Jordan: This is a lighter medium medium-bodied wine that presents with poise and great appeal. Juicy bright red fruits are dominant. Floral rose petal and raspberry nuances on the nose, while the palate runs long with spicy red fruits. Lovely the glistening palate with its fine merging of silky tannin and fine-grained oak. Works for me. 93pts.
