This premium Barossa Shiraz typically sells for $150 AUD in Australia - which equates to approximately $165 NZD per bottle. With the effects of the trade spat between Australia and China still hurting Australia's premium red wine industry, we were approached to sell a parcel of this wine under the radar in New Zealand as a mystery deal* to move some of the capacity that the Asian markets would normally account for.
Produced in only the best performing vintages, this super premium, single vineyard Mystery Shiraz is a representation of the best barrels from the winery's oldest blocks of shiraz, and what a wine it is. Vinted from hand-picked fruit using small-batch winemaking techniques, the palate is overflowing with dark, luscious fruits, mocha and dark chocolate notes with finely grained tannins. Everything is in balance, and we are 100% confident that anyone who buys this wine will immediately recognise the sheer value for money it represents. Read the reviews below to reassure yourself what's on the table here.
The 2021 vintage in Barossa was heralded as one of the best vintages to date, and this delectable wine displays all the advantages of a superb growing season and a winemaking team at the top of their game. It has huge cellar potential and will continue to develop over the coming 2 decades.
Tasting notes
Ray Jordan: The team's Reserve is a barrel selection from the harvest of their oldest blocks of Barossa Shiraz, and only made in the best vintages. 2021 is categorically one of those 'best vintages'. The oak used to mature the wine will be a mix of new French and American hogsheads and the time spent in them will be up to two and a half years. Not surprisingly, there is a serious oak influence in this wine, but it is integrating superbly. The colour is an opaque maroon. This is a big, bold and delicious red, richly flavoured. Mocha, soy, coffee beans, dark chocolate, cassis, beefstock, licorice and axle grease. Fine acidity here, running the length, silky but rather abundant tannins and great length. This is a twenty year proposition. 98pts.
Ken Gargett: I have to say that there have been some wonderful wines from this vintage, and this masterpiece is right up there with the best of them. It’s a limited production release and given the quality of the vintage it makes sense it has been created in this season. The low crops have created a wine of tremendous concentration and intensity, but at the same time the balance is superb. Spicy blackberry and plum with a ladling of dark syrup chocolate and subtle coffee grinds. Loving it now. 96pts.
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit: A powerful rendition; the intense bouquet shows cassis, dark chocolate, olive, toasted spice, cedar and potpourri aromas, leading to a concentrated palate that's dense and weighty. Substantial and brooding, it's wonderfully structured with layers of fine tannins, finishing immensely long and captivating. 97pts.
