Bowmore's 12 year old expression, and as the first licensed Islay whisky house, it is widely regarded as Islay's staple malt. Officially founded in 1779, but it's commonly speculated that they were making the stuff decades before that.
The 12 has a pronounced iodine character with plenty of pepper, yet the malt is balanced and smooth, with a hint of smoke. The peat is integrated in oak, though the wood is not overwhelming. Overall a very well-rounded and approachable scotch.
