New Alchemy owners, Cairn and Rebecca Coghill, have clearly maintaned the integrity of this much adored brand with this 2024 release. From the small but perfectly formed 2024 vintage, this chardonnay has recently picked up impressive accolades - a testament to the skillful winemaking and commitment to producing quality wines.
Produced from selectively hand-picked single vineyard fruit, this chardonnay explodes on the palate with creamy flavours in the classic lemon-brulee spectrum, some toasty oak complexity and a fresh line of acidity that counters the natural fruit weight of this powerhouse wine. Full malolactic fermentation and a 25% new oak component brings a very subtle touch of flinty gunsmoke on the nose, adding a modern touch, but this robust release is all about the beauty of tour de force Hawke's Bay Chardonnay.
Tasting note
Hawke's Bay Wine Awards judges: "Judges loved the complex white peach, toasty oak and the delicious richness and salivating salinity on the palate, powerful style done very well."
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit: "Wonderfully styled with complexity, the wine exhibits ripe stone fruit, lemon peel, hazelnut, and vanilla notes on the nose, complemented by a hint of gun smoke. It’s concentrated on the palate, offering terrific weight and
creamy flow, wonderfully structured by beautifully pitched acidity, finishing impressively long and satisfying. At its best: now to 2034."
The winery: "Wonderfully bright and aromatic with flinty nuances, sweet cedary oak spice, apple crumble, lemon curd, floral honeysuckle and oyster shell notes. The palate is layered with concentrated stone fruit and ripe lemon flavours, generously structured with juicy saline qualities and a deliciously long finish."
