Balvenie
The Balvenie is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery founded in 1892 by William Grant in Dufftown, Speyside, on land near the ruins of Balvenie Castle. Grant had learned the trade managing nearby Mortlach distillery, and it has stayed with William Grant & Sons ever since, alongside sister distillery Glenfiddich. Malt master David Stewart, who joined in the 1960s, later pioneered finishing whisky in a second cask type, a technique that has since become standard across the wider industry.
What sets Balvenie apart is how much of the process still happens on site, one of only a handful of Scottish distilleries with its own floor maltings, coppersmith, and cooperage, covering nearly every stage of production in house. Water is drawn from the Robbie Dubh spring, and the spirit tends towards a honeyed, orchard fruit character built for slow sipping. It remains one of the more hands on names in single malt.
