Bruichladdich's Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2014 is Islay whisky at its most honest and expressive. Made with barley grown entirely on the island and peated to 40 PPM, this single malt goes beyond smoke and strength to tell a real story of place. Eight local farms, all within 15 miles of the distillery, took on the challenge of growing barley in Islay’s tough coastal conditions, and the result is a whisky with total traceability and genuine island character.

Bottled at 50% ABV, this 2014 vintage balances power with finesse. Matured primarily in first fill bourbon casks, with small portions of virgin oak and Bordeaux wine casks, it brings together fruit, smoke and maritime freshness in a way Port Charlotte does so well. There is peat here, unmistakably so, but it is wrapped in ripe orchard fruit, sweet malt and a soft coastal salinity that keeps everything in check. Confident, complex and deeply rooted in its origins, this is a benchmark Islay barley release.

Tasting Notes

Malty digestive biscuits and glowing peat embers lead on the nose, followed by vanilla, honey, toffee and crème brûlée. As it opens, bright citrus and fruit notes emerge, with lemon rind, grapefruit, ripe melon, peach and crisp red apple, alongside a gentle maritime lift and warming spice. The palate opens with citrus tang before moving into sweet stone fruit and elegant peat smoke. Apricot, peach and ripe melon sit alongside toasted oak, coconut, marzipan and a hint of tobacco. The finish is beautifully balanced, with soft stoned fruit and toasted oak sweetness fading into a dry, lingering barbeque smoke.
