Gin Clear Day is the debut gin from Christchurch based 4 BARS Distillery, and it wears its aviation roots proudly. This is not just the first gin from the distillery, it is a statement of intent. Bold, precise and immaculately balanced, this gin sets the tone for what 4 BARS is all about.
The name comes straight from aviation slang. Pilots use the phrase “gin clear day” to describe perfect flying conditions, blue skies, full visibility and total confidence in what lies ahead. That idea of clarity runs through everything here. From the clean, juniper-forward flavour profile to the meticulous production approach, this gin is designed to feel focused, deliberate and uplifting, much like taking off on a flawless morning flight.
4 BARS Distillery was founded by a pilot turned distiller, and the aviation influence is baked into the brand DNA. The distillery's name refers to the four bars worn by an aircraft captain, a symbol of mastery, discipline and responsibility earned over time. That same mindset carries through to the distillery, where precision, consistency and attention to detail are non-negotiable. Gin Clear Day is crafted in Christchurch using a classic botanical structure, but pushed to a higher strength and intensity for extra presence in the glass.
The aeronautical cues continue well beyond the liquid. The bottle is an meticulously crafted marvel - featuring metal bars embedded into the glass, a heavyweight solid steel stopper, turbine inspired base, and a bold red “Remove Before Flight” tag. It feels engineered rather than decorated, more aircraft component than spirit bottle, and it absolutely commands attention on the shelf or bar cart. This is a gin that looks ultra-premium before it is even poured - and we can safely say, the liquid inside is just as good:
Tasting Notes
Bright orange citrus and piney juniper lead on the nose, followed by gentle warmth from nutmeg and cinnamon. The palate is confident and full bodied, with fresh citrus up front, a strong juniper backbone and a lift of pink peppercorn spice. The finish is long, clean and crisp, with lingering warmth and a refreshing snap that begs another sip.
