If you haven't been introduced to the charms of Waipara Pinot Noir, then this is a sensational wine to kick off with. Savoury and seductive, this is a Pinot that drinks well above our modest price.
Juicy, rounded and wonderfully expressive, there’s plenty going on in the glass. Ripe red cherry and dark berry fruit sit alongside subtle savoury notes and gentle spice, with soft tannins giving the wine a smooth, supple feel. There’s lovely freshness running through it too, keeping all that generous fruit bright and beautifully balanced.
It’s immediately approachable and immensely drinkable, but with enough depth and character to remind you why North Canterbury has built such a strong reputation for Pinot Noir.
A cracking match with roast lamb, duck, mushroom dishes or a good piece of steak. Equally, this is exactly the sort of Pinot we’d happily open on a Friday night with nothing more complicated than a glass and a comfortable chair.
Tasting note
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit: "It's splendidly fruited and fragrant on the nose, showing dark plum, clove, floral, and toasted almond characters, followed by a succulent palate that's supple and soothing. Wonderfully framed by silky texture and elegant tannins, finishing with a lingering and delectable aftertaste. At its best: now to 2030."
The winery writes: "A perfect summer created a wine with dark berry and ripe cherry aromas. The palate is round and generous with medium tannins and well-balanced acidity. Some black pepper spices add to the complexity of the wine."
