This super-premium, old vine Barossa Shiraz typically sells for $90 AUD in Australia - which equates to approximately $100 NZD per bottle. With the effects of the worldwide drop in wine demand still ongoing, we were approached to sell a parcel of this wine under the radar in New Zealand as a mystery deal* to move some of their excess inventory, stock that wouldn't normally reach our shores.
The 2022 Barossa vintage was a standout, delivering wines of remarkable concentration, purity and complexity. This sumptuous release shows off the benefits of an exceptional growing season and a winemaking team firing on all cylinders. Read the reviews below to reassure yourself what's on the table here.
In the glass it shines a deep glossy red, with aromas of spicy plum and milk chocolate. Old vine Barossa shiraz at its best, it’s rich and engaging on the palate with layers of dark cherry and plum, supported by finely woven tannins that bring power and poise. The critics agree, with scores of 96 and 95 points confirming its class.
Tasting note
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit: "Impressive rich fruit lead the way with toasty oak, vanilla, tapenade and Asian spice nuances, it's sumptuous and plush in the mouth, displaying outstanding concentration and multi-layered mouthfeel. Wonderfully framed by loads of silky tannins, making it brooding and velvety at the same time. At its best: 2026 to 2040." 96pts.
Ray Jordan: "Has a faint dried herb overlay merging with the savoury plummy fruit characters. A little spicy nuance adds further to the detailed aroma. The palate is more medium weight with impeccable balance while the fruit is laced with fine chalky tannins and complemented by fine-grained subtle oak. The older oak plays a role but does not intrude on the integrity of the fruit. An elegant wine with a savoury finish that makes it such a good wine with food even now." 95pts.
Ken Gargett: "Deep dense maroon, the nose exhibits notes of spices, cocoa powder, soy, aniseed, tobacco leaves, mocha, chocolate and black fruits. Displaying a silky palate with focus and finesse, the wine has fine balance and a long, lingering finish, with satiny tannins. This is a fifteen year proposition." 95pts.
