Conceived by three mates connected through wine - Ollie Powrie, Shaye Bird and Ant Saunders - this is a salivating expression of crisp Gisborne Albarino that is destined to be part of your alfresco gatherings this summer. This perfectly pitched passion project is a study in how to capture the imagination of the wine buying public, with that same, iconic fish label. Industry commentators have been predicting that albarino is going to be the next big thing in New Zealand wine in recent years - and with wines of this calibre hitting the market, we are all for it.
Incredibly ripe and meticulously hand harvested, Albarino Brothers Wild Ferment Albarino is delicious, balanced and complex with citrus and stone fruit notes. The wine is still zesty and dry to taste - and the mineral, lightly saline character that albarino should exhibit is there for all to see - but that luxe, silky mouthfeel elevates everything to a whole new level. There is great structure to this wine - and the attention to detail here is particularly evident. Wow.
Tasting note
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit: "Stylish and complex, the inviting bouquet shows apricot, rockmelon, vanilla, hazelnut, and savoury pastry aromas. The concentrated palate delivers outstanding weight and richly textured mouthfeel, wonderfully framed by beautifully infused acidity, making it seductive and hugely appealing."
David Walker Bell, WineFolio: "A pale green-straw colour in the glass. Vibrant aromas of Granny Smith apple, lime leaf, grapefruit, white peach and jasmine florals promise much. The palate is also very energetic, with a racy, saline acidity leading the charge. The ripe Gisborne fruit might be a little fleshy and juicy for Albarino traditionalists, but this a defiantly kiwi expression. The crispness continues into the salivating finish."
