IT'S BACK!!! The return of our best selling mystery wine brand...ever!! First in - first pick, if you know what we mean. Strictly while stocks last. Be quick - buy heaps.
This premium Barossa Shiraz typically sells for $480 AUD in Australia - which currently equates to approximately $570 NZD per bottle. With the effects of the trade spat between Australia and China still hurting Australia's premium red wine industry, we were approached to sell a parcel of this wine under the radar in New Zealand as a mystery deal* to move some of the capacity that the Asian markets would normally account for.
This brand has had very little exposure in the New Zealand market and we understand that aside from the parcel we had for sale last year, only a handful of cases have ever been sold here, as the winery has concentrated on domestic sales and their key international markets. Before the trade spat, this brand enjoyed spectacular success within China's elite circles, and we have been told that the only more recognised Australian wine brand in that market is Penfolds.
We have tasted this wine and, as the reviews below attest, it is spectacular; a highly perfumed, concentrated and opulent release that amplifies everything that the world loves about elite Barossa Shiraz. No expense has been spared in the vineyards or winery to create this wine. The fruit weight, tannin and acid components are beautifully expressed and the finish is incredibly long. Read the reviews below to reassure yourself what's on the table here.
In our minds, this 2021 release sits at the same level as the very finest examples of shiraz that the Barossa has to offer - including the most famous labels in Australian winemaking. It has enormous cellar potential and will continue to drink well over the coming 2-3 decades. (As a relatively young release for wine of this magnitude, we suggest that you decant it before service if you open a bottle in the next few years.)
Tasting notes
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit: "Gorgeously composed with power and grace, the wine shows dark fruit richness, cake spice, toasty oak, smoked game, and dark chocolate aromas of the nose. The concentrated palate exhibits impressive weight and persistence, enhanced by velvety texture and finely infused tannins. It's bold and sumptuous with refinement and harmony, making it seductively appealing and fabulously drinkable. At its best: now to 2040." 97pts
Ray Jordan: "Exquisite. This is what modern Barossa Shiraz is all about. It brings the power and concentrated opulence firmly into the frame, but then it gently caresses and controls it in a more refined presentation. These are words you might not have read about old-time Barossa Shiraz. Deep and concentrated power with rich layered dark fruit, perfectly balanced with fine-grained oak and silky fine tannins. It’s awash with dark fruits cascading down through to a long finish." 97pts.
Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot: "Another special Barossa Shiraz, from old vines, low yields and a fabulous vintage. If you love big, bold Barossa reds, splash out again, under cork and also the hefty bottle. This is near black in colour. Excellent oak integration, still melding but adding a gorgeous vanillin note to the wine. On the nose, we have chocolate, plums, graphite, black fruits, axle grease, cloves, charcuterie, blueberries and mulberries. Concentration throughout, the intensity never wavers. Sleek tannins and a supple texture, formidable stuff. Immaculate balance and impressive length, if you can leave this in the cellar for three to five years before opening one, you won’t regret it. Then enjoy for the following ten to twenty years. Cracking stuff. " 95pts.
