Bruichladdich's Bere Barley 2013 is a whisky with real soul. Made using ancient Bere barley grown in Orkney, this single malt is all about flavour, heritage and doing things the hard way for the right reasons. Bere is one of the oldest cultivated grains in Scotland, tough, resilient and packed with character, and Bruichladdich has been championing its return to whisky making for nearly two decades.

Distilled in 2013 and matured for 10 years in a mix of first fill bourbon barrels and second fill Pauillac wine casks, this is a beautifully expressive, cereal-driven single malt. The oak supports rather than dominates, letting the character of the grain shine through. The result is soft, rounded and layered, with gentle fruit, malty sweetness and subtle spice. It feels thoughtful, quietly complex and unmistakably Bruichladdich.

Tasting Notes

Warm citrus and tropical fruit open the nose, followed by sweet malty flour, peach skin, vanilla pod and candied orange. As it opens, soft floral notes drift in alongside creamy fudge and a touch of violet. The palate is unmistakably grain-led, showing popcorn, brown sugar and warm porridge, balanced by apricot, peach, melon and gentle oak. Hints of vanilla, coconut and marzipan add richness without heaviness. The finish is soft and comforting, with milk chocolate, crème brûlée, malted grain and lingering mango and orange blossom honey.
