Bruichladdich's Octomore 16.2 is where brute peat meets serious cask play. Made from the same batch of Scottish barley as the 16.1 and peated to a formidable 101.4 PPM, this edition takes things further by leaning hard into its finishing casks. After initial maturation in Oloroso and Bordeaux wine casks, the whisky is recasked into Madeira and Portuguese Moscatel for its final year, layering sweetness and richness around Octomore’s unmistakable smoke.
Bottled at 58.1% ABV, this is a big, expressive whisky that rewards time and attention. The peat is powerful but beautifully controlled, wrapped in caramelised sugars, roasted nuts and dried fruit, with a sweet campfire character running through the core. Compared to 16.1, this is the more opulent, cask-driven sibling, complex, indulgent and endlessly engaging.
Tasting Notes
Soft dried fruits and sweet peat smoke open the nose, followed by sunbaked tropical fruit, delicate florals and toasted oak. Hints of honeysuckle and orange blossom lift through the smoke, alongside a gentle nuttiness and a fresh maritime edge. The palate is rich and sweet, with caramelised sugar, roasted nuts and dried fruits leading the way. Candied peel and warming spice follow, grounded by deep, earthy peat and a touch of sea salt. The finish is long, sweet and smoky, fading into coastal freshness and lingering wood spice.
