Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Cask Exploration SYC:01 2013 is a bold, boundary-pushing Islay single malt that takes Port Charlotte’s signature peat in a completely new direction. This is the first time Syrah wine casks have been used in the Cask Exploration series, and the result is seriously impressive. The rich, full-bodied character of Syrah brings a wave of red fruit, spice and warmth that sits beautifully alongside Port Charlotte’s elegant, smoky core.

Distilled from 100% fully traceable Scottish barley, peated to 40 PPM, and matured entirely on Islay, this 2013 vintage is all about place and provenance. The Syrah casks come from a French producer focused on organic and biodynamic winemaking, with the same respect for terroir that defines Bruichladdich’s approach. After ten years of maturation, this is a whisky that feels powerful yet refined, delivering depth, texture and surprising smoothness at full strength.

Tasting Notes

Sweet caramel and fresh berries lead the nose, followed by strawberry, red apple and apricot jam, wrapped in gentle peat smoke. Hints of ginger, marzipan, honey and bonfire oak add warmth and complexity. The palate opens with charred oak and barbeque smoke, balanced by candied citrus, mango, brown sugar and a playful bubblegum note. With a little water, floral and herbal tones emerge alongside honey, roasted coffee and soft spice. The finish is long and layered, with lingering peat smoke, toasted Brazil nuts, coconut, cocoa powder and a final coastal hint of dried seaweed.
