In 1949, the Hombo family started distilling whisky at Mars Distillery, led by Kiichiro Iwai. In 1984, production moved to a high-altitude site in Nagano and a lighter style of whisky was introduced. However, they closed in 1992 due to Japan's whisky market crash and reopened in 2011.
This Mars Iwai Tradition blended whisky was released in 2021 as a limited edition, with additional maturation time in Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks lending a delightful sweetness to the flavor. Pedro Ximenez, a Spanish white grape variety, is renowned for its intense sweetness in the dessert-style sherry.
Tasting Notes
This fine whisky boasts a beautiful, amber hue and features indulgent aromas of brown sugar and maple syrup. On the palate, a smooth and velvety texture accompanies flavors of honey, caramelized sugar, and subtle hints of peat. The finish is full-bodied and complex, with notes of cacao and a touch of bitter chocolate. Overall, this whisky exudes sophistication and balance.
