This top shelf McLaren Vale Shiraz typically sells for $100 AUD in Australia - which equates to approximately $105 NZD per bottle. With the effects of the worldwide drop in wine demand still ongoing, we were approached to sell a parcel of this wine under the radar in New Zealand as a mystery deal* to move some of their excess inventory, stock that wouldn't normally reach our shores.

Awarded up to 96 points by leading wine critics, this McLaren Vale Shiraz is a powerhouse expression of the region. Bold, brooding and beautifully structured, it’s a textbook example of top-tier Aussie Shiraz at full volume. Read the reviews below to reassure yourself what's on the table here.

We’ve tasted it ourselves, and it more than lives up to the hype. This is a richly concentrated, full-bodied wine that captures everything people love about McLaren Vale Shiraz. It's made with no corners cut - just quality fruit, expert craftsmanship and serious intent.

This release has all the swagger of a classic, with the kind of weight and generosity that fans of ‘old school’ Shiraz will adore. Drink one now, stash a few for winter, and cellar the rest for up to 15 years.

Tasting note

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit: "A powerful rendition of the variety, showing blackberry, cured meat, cedar, rich floral, and cakespice aromas on the nose. The palate delivers impressive weight and richness, splendidly supported by a fleshy texture and a wealth of polished tannins. Opulent and richly layered with a sustained, structured finish. At its best: now to 2040." 96pts.

Ray Jordan: "Comes from 60-year-old McLaren Vale vines in this excellent year. Smooth, so smooth. Yet immense concentration and intensity is driving a powerful wine. The nose reveals a combination of vanillin oak and dark cherry with spicy plum and a dollop of dark chocolate. The palate is seamlessly woven with prune-like fruits, spices and lightly cedary character. Has a slightly chewy finish. Drink by: 2025-2039." 95pts.

Ken Gargett: "The team look to this wine as a return to the old ways, the "glory days", which should cue everyone into a rousing rendition of Springsteen. Failing that, simply enjoying a cracking glass of red from this brilliant vintage should be enough. Crimson/magenta in hue, the nose gives us notes of chocolate, vanilla, mocha, coffee beans, spices, bay leaves and licorice. There are still lashings of oak, quality oak and well handled, which will possibly divide the crowd a little, but it is a delicious wine and will be adored by many. The palate sees the emergence of bright, black cherry flavours. Excellent length, fine tannins and juicy acidity tie up a most pleasing package. It will continue to impress for the next eight to ten years." 94pts.
