This 2022 FDR release is an understated star of the Gimblett Gravels, with classic styling, elegant structure, and just the right amount of intrigue. Crafted under the watchful eye of Steve Smith MW (and the likely eye-roll of his ever-patient wife Laura), this wine showcases not only deep industry roots, but also smart sourcing, thanks to Steve’s decades-long connections within New Zealand’s top vineyard sites.
The blend is unconventional: cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and tempranillo, with no merlot in sight. Tempranillo brings body, warmth and plush texture to the firm framework of the cabernets, resulting in a wine that’s supple yet precise, polished but not flashy. Expect dark berries, savoury spice and a touch of gravelly texture to keep things grounded.
A wine for lovers of elegant structure and quiet confidence, this is one to enjoy now with food or stash for a few years in the cellar. This is a must try.
