Southward Slow Barrel Aged Blueberry Gin is a much requested comeback from Wellington’s Southward Distilling, returning almost four years after its original release. Made in the style of a classic sloe gin using New Zealand blueberries, it takes Southward’s adventurous approach to distilling and layers it with plenty of ripe fruit, gentle sweetness, and barrel aged depth. The first release sold quickly and customers have been asking for its return ever since, so this time Southward plans to work it into more regular rotation.
This rich, juicy expression is steeped with New Zealand blueberries before being rested in a Pinot Noir barrel, bringing subtle oak, wine barrel depth, and gentle spice into all that vibrant berry fruit. The result lands somewhere between gin, sloe gin, and a beautifully spiced red wine, while still keeping enough botanical structure underneath to hold everything together. Enjoy it cold over ice, lengthen it with tonic, or pour it into a spritz for something a little different from the usual gin lineup. Southward’s earlier blueberry experiments have also been praised for their bright blue fruit and gentle tannic character.
Tasting Notes
