Yalumba has been making Galway Vintage since the 1940s, and it has built a pretty impressive reputation for delivering proper Barossa Shiraz character without the hefty price tag. The 2023 is sourced from vineyards throughout the Barossa, bringing together fruit from a range of different soils and sites to produce a full-flavoured, beautifully approachable red.
Ripe plum, blackberry and blackcurrant lead the charge, backed by layers of sweet spice, vanilla, dark chocolate and a subtle savoury edge. There are touches of cinnamon, clove and liquorice in the background, giving the wine plenty of interest without taking away from all that lovely ripe fruit. The palate is generous and nicely rounded, with soft, fine tannins and enough freshness to keep everything balanced.
If you love your reds rich, generous and packed with flavour, this is classic Barossa Shiraz that delivers everything you want at a seriously attractive price.

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit: "It's fruit-forward and fragrant on the nose, showing dark plum, floral, subtle spice, and toasted almond characters. The palate is succulent and supple, well supported by fine-grained tannins, making it silky and lingering with tasty fruit flavours. At its best: now to 2029."
Cameron Douglas MS: "Classic Shiraz scents of ripe red berry fruits, some spice and dried herb with moments of licorice and peppercorn. Flavours on the palate suggest red currant and tart raspberry then plum and milk chocolate. The use of oak adds a touch of smoke and tannin. Plenty of acidity and drive. Well made with best drinking from 2025 through 2030."
The winery writes: "Aromas of ripe plum and dark fruits entwined with subtle notes of vanilla, blackcurrant and savoury roast hinting at its complex, earthy character. Cinnamon and cloves add warmth, while black tea and bay leaf bring complexity to the nose with a touch of blackcurrant. Beautifully balanced with vibrant, red fruit flavours. Soft tannins provide smooth, velvety texture. Well structured with balanced acidity and fine, elegant tannins on the finish."
