The Best Homemade Negroni Cocktail Recipe - Easy Tiger

The Best Homemade Negroni Cocktail Recipe - Easy Tiger

For a longtime the Negroni has been known as the bartender's favourite cocktail, one that casual cocktail drinkers never seemed to consider when browsing their leather-bound menus. At long last, gin has skyrocketed in popularity, and so too has this perfect cocktail.

The next stage in this renaissance, is the realisation that a Negroni doesn't need to cost $18 and be prepared by a bow-tied mixologist - it's actually incredibly simple to make at home.

So how do you make the perfect homemade Negroni?

What you'll need

  • Gin - the better the gin, the better your Negroni
  • Campari - or any orange aperitif (Aperol makes a more sweet version)
  • Sweet vermouth (red/rosso) - again, the better the better
  • An Orange - We don't sell those, so steal one from your neighbour's tree

Steps

  1. Add 1 shot (30ml) each of your Gin, Campari and Sweet Vermouth to a mixing glass filled with ice, and stir in circles until well-chilled - 30 laps around the glass is a good rule of thumb.

  2. Strain your concoction into the prettiest glass at hand, over a large ice cube (or 3 or 4 boring ice cubes).

  3. Garnish with a twisted orange peel - Actually a lot easier than it looks, just run a small knife along the skin of the orange for a couple of inches, then twist it into a spiral.

 Easy huh.

The Easiest Recipe for a Classic Negroni (with a Kiwi Twist)

The Easiest Recipe for a Classic Negroni (with a Kiwi Twist)

The Negroni is one of the world’s most iconic cocktails - strong, bitter, and effortlessly classy. Best of all? It’s incredibly easy to make. Just three equal parts, stirred over ice, and you’ve got yourself a bar-quality drink in under a minute.

Here’s how to make a perfect Negroni at home - plus a Kiwi twist that brings local flavour into the mix.

What You’ll Need

How to Make It

  1. Add 30mls of gin, vermouth, and Campari to a mixing glass filled with ice. Always equal parts, so feel free to do double, triple, or as many shots as you like - just keep them even.

  2. Stir for about 20–30 seconds, until the drink is ice-cold and nicely diluted. Patience is key here for getting it perfectly smooth.

  3. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.

  4. Garnish with a twist of orange peel (or the dehydrated kiwifruit slice!) - if you're sticking to the classic peel then give it a quick squeeze over the drink to release the oils, then drop it in.

Easy Tiger Tip:

Want a smoother, richer drink? Try using a barrel-aged gin, or one infused with native Kiwi botanicals like kawakawa, horopito or Gisborne oranges. It adds a warm, earthy twist to the classic profile - perfect for chilly evenings or impressing your mates.

Make It Yours

This base recipe opens the door to a few fun variations:

  • Negroni Sbagliato – Swap the gin for sparkling wine. Yes, that’s the one that went viral.

  • Boulevardier – Replace gin with bourbon for a smoky, wintery version (this is Jack's favourite)

  • Sweet Negroni – Use Aperol instead of Campari. Lighter, sweeter and floral.
